Complaints of late evening lawn maintenance spur Carmel council to consider tightening noise ordinance

The Carmel City Council is considering tightening the city’s noise ordinance.

At the Aug. 6 meeting, Councilor Laura Campbell said she’d received several complaints from residents about commercial lawn services working in neighborhoods at 8:30 or 9 p.m. at night. After looking at the noise ordinance, she discovered they weren’t violating city code.

“We found it was quite interesting that companies can start as early as 6 a.m. and go as late as 10 p.m.,” Campbell said.

The proposed changes would limit hours for using lawn mowers, leaf blowers and other loud lawn maintenance equipment to between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.

The council sent the amendments to the Finance, Utilities and Rules Committee for review.
