Recommendation on fate of Orchard Park, Carmel elementary schools expected at May 21 school board meeting

A recommendation on the future of Orchard Park and Carmel elementary schools is expected to be made at the Carmel Clay Schools board of trustees May 21 meeting.

Throughout April and May, CCS officials have held community meetings to discuss elementary school facilities. In part because Orchard Park and Carmel elementary schools are next due for major renovations, they have been at the forefront of the discussion about whether CCS should close one or two campuses because of projected declines in the student population. The district is also considering construction of a new elementary school on Clay Center Road.

School board members will not vote on the issue at the May meeting. The earliest they could take action on the recommendation from Co-interim Supt. Roger McMichael would be at the June 25 meeting, according to an email sent to CCS parents and staff members.

The May 21 school board meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Educational Services Center, 5201 E. Main St. It will be available to view on the district’s YouTube channel shortly after the meeting ends.
