Zionsville-based Mr. Canary Company, which produces bird feeders, has always sought to make bird watching fun and easy.

Their newest product, the Bird Buffet System, caught the attention of the Home Shopping Network, which will air information about it with a national audience three times May 8.

“They’re having a day called ‘Get Ready for Summer,’” said Jan Long, president of Mr. Canary. “It starts at midnight on May 8. I’ll be on sometime between the midnight and the 1 a.m. hour, and then I go on between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m., and then again between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. It’s pretty exciting.”

The idea for the Bird Buffet System came was inspired by a trip to an assisted living trade show. Long hopes the product will revolutionize the industry.

“We know bird feeding is fun, but there is a lot of maintenance involved,” Long said. “We started thinking about how we could make it so easy for people who live in these facilities or for the people around them that it would be easier to keep them filled.”

Long and Mr. Canary Company COO Nathaniel O’Dell created a self-proclaimed “crack” research and development team. They came up with a permanent housing structure for birds that has a removable feed tray. They call it the Bird Buffet System.

“We decided to make a removable tray that holds the seed, and once it’s empty, you just recycle it and then stick a new tray in the structure,” Long said.

Long hopes the product helps customers connect with nature.

“We have so many great calls from our customers,” she said. “The importance is just looking up from your screen and connecting with nature.”
