HSE Academy of Finance searches for business partners

The Academy of Finance at Hamilton Southeastern High School is looking for businesses to partner with for summer internship opportunities. AOF is a program offered to juniors that combines curriculum work with an internship during the summer between their junior and senior year.

“Students are (sent) through specific classes that focus on economics, accounting and finance,” said Eric Rosenbaum, department chairperson. “Then along with that curriculum track we added some community collaboration. Each student is paired with a mentor from the community that they can job shadow and talk about different industries that are available after high school. The other collaboration piece is the internship.”

Students are compensated for their work. Internships typically begin in June and end  in mid-August.

“We have 34 juniors who will be looking for placement,” Rosenbaum said. “We start now looking for places. It goes all the way up until the summer. We’re looking for something where the student is in the office setting supporting the business.”

The purpose of the internship is twofold.

“We wanted to try and give them more exposure to different career paths,” Rosenbaum said. “The second part is we wanted to start to give students a little more exposure to the professional side of things. They learn the soft skills of what it takes to be responsible, to communicate and to work in a group. They can then transfer those skills to any job they get later on in life.”

Typical daily tasks include data entry, file maintenance, contacting clients and handling accounts receivable.

“The company will interview and select the student that is the best fit for the position,” Rosenbaum said.
