Obituary: Verlin L. Abbott

Verlin L. Abbott, 63, of Carmel, died Aug. 5. He was born June 24, 1954, in St. Joseph, Mo., the son of Verlin M. and Mary Lou (Johnston) Abbott. He married Margaret Svetlik on Aug. 2, 1996.

Verlin received his bachelor’s of science degree in 1976 from the University of Missouri. Also that year he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He proudly and honorably served for the next 20 years until his retirement in 1997. He was an active member of the American Legion China Post 1, Military Officers Association of America, and served as a board member of the Flying Tigers 69th DRS Association. Verlin was passionate about motorcycles and traveling the country. He also enjoyed flying drones and building model rockets. In 2015, he joined Indianapolis Funeral Escort, where he was able to combine his love of motorcycles and serving others.

He is survived by his loving wife of 21 years, Margaret Abbott; daughter, Crystal Abbott (Allen Jr.) Himes; father, Verlin (Marie) Abbott; siblings, Vince (Vickie) Abbott, Von (Debbie) Abbott, Verlinda (Bill) Heffel, Vicki (Bradley) Stain, and Vyron (Heather) Abbott; brothers and sisters-in-law, Colonel Mary Anne Svetlik, COL, Retired, USA, (Tony Blieberger, LTC, Retired, USA), Frank (Barbara) Svetlik, Harvey (Linda) Svetlik, George (Mary Ellen) Svetlik; and 22 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in passing by his mother, Mary Lou Abbott.
