“It was mostly for clarification purposes, that we are not just engaging at city level, but beyond,” said Al Salam Foundation board of trustees vice president Ashhar Madni, adding that members of the state legislature and Congress have been invited as well.

The event will be held at 7 p.m. June 9 at Creekside Middle School, 3525 E. 126th St. The Carmel event is held to break the fast during Ramadan with other families from the community and other faith communities. During month-long Ramadan, Muslims fast from eating and drinking from dawn to dusk. This year, Ramadan started May 27 and ends June 24.

“We’re expecting about 400 attendees, including children,” Madni said.  “Up until last year we were able to hold it at the elementary schools. Since the participation increased significantly, this year we moved it to a middle school.”

The event started with Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard’s hospitality. Madni said Al Salam officials began to discuss a civic engagement Iftar event in 2013.

“Mayor (Jim) Brainard offered us to host it at his house backyard,” Madni said. “We highly appreciated it then and still appreciate his gesture to allow us to do that.”

Madni said Brianard attends when his schedule permits.

“For the last couple of years there has been conflict with the mayor’s schedule, along with the availability of the venue,” Madni said. “I do believe whenever there has been no scheduling conflict, Mayor Brainard has attended and will attend in the future.”

Madni said he believes the Iftar is one of the biggest Ramadan events in the Indianapolis area.

Tickets are $10. Children 10 and under are admitted free. For more, visit eventbrite.com/e/mayors-civic-engagement-iftar-2017-tickets-34092050240.
