The Westfield Washington School District’s $90 million construction referendum passed with a 54 percent vote on May 2.
The referendum was proposed after an operational referendum of 20 cents per $100 of assessed value passed with an 81 percent vote in November 2016. That referendum was a renewal that lowered a previous rate of 23 cents per $100 of assessed value by 3 cents. It will last for seven years.
The construction referendum would allow for expansions to the intermediate, middle and high schools and maintenance to the elementary schools. The expansions are expected to allow for a total of 1,700 additional students at the intermediate, middle and high schools. The cost was estimated at approximately 30 cents per $100 assessed value and would last approximately 20 years for taxpayers.
On average, the referendum would cost a $250,000 home $32 a month.
The construction referendum was the only question on the May 2 special election ballot.
