Letter: WWS seeks referendum support

0

Editor,

Our community is growing and the Westfield Washington School district is one of the fastest-growing school districts in Indiana. Consequently, Westfield Intermediate School, Westfield Middle School and Westfield High School facilities are all over 95 percent of student capacity. WWS is working to get a special election in May for a construction referendum that would allow construction on WIS, WMS and WHS to begin this summer. Construction will improve class sizes, expand technology capabilities and cover district-wide renovations. Since this vote will affect all residents of Westfield and Washington Township, please take the time to learn about the referendum (more information available at westfieldyes.com) to make your own decision. We think you will join the WYSI Board of Directors in supporting the referendum.

Although WYSI is not a political body, we feel that it is necessary to support the school system as rental of WWS facilities is an integral part of our organization’s ability to host activities. Additionally, we believe that lessons gained while playing sports and the exercise our kids get from being active in our organization leads to a well-rounded, healthy child as we work hand-in-hand with parents and our schools to raise the youth of our community.

You might remember that WYSI also recently supported the operating referendum that was on the ballot last November. It is important to understand that the funds that are being raised in the May referendum are to cover district-wide facility renovations. Monies from the November referendum can only be used to pay salaries and maintain the existing programs that give Westfield children an amazing education experience. Although you might not have children currently in the school, remember that a quality school drives value to your property and provides a high quality of life for our residents.

Thank you for taking the time to learn about this important referendum and your continued support of youth sports in our community!

Mike Good, vice president

Rebecca Ogle, treasurer

Blake Collinsworth, sports director

Chris Defendis, secretary

Aaron Sherrick, fundraising director
