Crash claims Carmel man’s life  – A Westfield single-vehicle crash killed a Carmel man at 2:04 a.m. Dec. 11 near 15300 Towne Rd. Westfield Police Dept. officers were dispatched to the area when a witness dialed 911 after seeing a white truck off the road against a tree. David Dishon, 58, of Carmel, was located in the passenger seat, and the Westfield Fire Dept. was requested. Dishon was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt. The incident is still under investigation, and according to a press release from WPD, road conditions do not seem to be a factor. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were involved.

Humane Society sponsorships – The Humane Society of Hamilton County has a holiday sponsorship program for those wanting to help. Donations in the amount of $25 or $50 will provide an ornament that will decorate the walls, kennels and cages of the Humane Society. To learn more, or make a donation, visit HamiltonHumane.com.

Teacher scholarship deadline – The deadline to apply for the Next Generation Teacher Scholarship, paying $7,500 per year for students pursuing a career in education, is Dec. 31. The scholarship is available to 200 high-achieving high school and college students each year who graduate in the top 20 percent of their class or score in the top 20 percentile on the SAT or ACT. Eligible students must be nominated by a teacher and submit their nomination form to the Indiana Commission for Higher Education. License branch holiday hours – All BMV license branches will be closed from Dec. 23 through Dec. 26 in observance of the Christmas holiday. All license branches resume normal business hours Dec. 27. In addition, license branches will be closed from Dec. 31 through Jan. 2 in observance of the New Year’s holiday. All license branches resume normal hours of operation Jan. 3.

New child care finder service – The Indiana Family and Social Services Administration has announced a new online tool to assist families in finding child care and early education providers for their children throughout the state. Child Care Finder allows families to search for licensed providers, inspections reports, complaints and enforcement actions against providers. For more, visit www.ChildCareFinder.in.gov.

Students attend conference – Local high school students recently got a behind-the-scenes look at state government during the 2016 Luke Kenley Leadership Conference held at the Indiana Statehouse. Students attended panel discussions, met with legislators and got insights from reporters. Local students include Michael Pitz of Carmel High School and Cooper Fetters and Mathilda Martin of Guerin High School.

Silver Anniversary Team named – Eighteen men have been named to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame’s 2017 Silver Anniversary Team, based on outstanding accomplishments as a senior basketball player 25 years ago. The team includes 13 members of the 1992 Indiana All-Star squad. One of those squad members is Carmel resident Scott Shepherd. All Men’s Silver Anniversary Team members will be honored at the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame’s annual Men’s Banquet in March.

VP appointed – Hamilton County Commissioner Mark Heirbrandt was elected vice president of the Indiana Association of County Commissioners (IACC) East Central District during thir annual conference. Heirbrandt will serve on the IACC’s board of directors, which determines policies and legislative goals for the Association.

Local author wins award – Local author K.N. Johnson recently won first place in the international Pygmalion Contest hosted by Mythraeum LLC, a Colorado publishing and film production company. Johnson earned a cash award and a story feature on Mythraeum’s website. Her story is now in competition with five winners of other 2016 contests for a chance to be produced into a short film.

Corrections officers needed – The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office will be hiring up to 13 new correction officers. Children’s art featured – Art work inspired by the study of famous artists, their history and culture will be featured at the World’s Smallest Children’s Art Gallery in December. The artistic works will come from students at Orchard Park Elementary School and be featured through the end of the month. The gallery is open from 2 to 4 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Christmas Eve services – St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 126th Street and Gray Road, will offer the following services on Christmas Eve: 5 p.m. – Family Worship, an informal service based on Charlie Brown Christmas; 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. – Candlelight services; 11 p.m. Candlelight and communion service. Christmas Eve services – Carmel United Methodist Church will offer five services on Christmas Eve. All services will include candlelight and traditional Christmas hymns. The services are as follows: 3 p.m. – Contemporary; 5 p.m. – Family; 7 p.m. – Traditional, childcare offered; 9 p.m. – Traditional; 11 p.m. – Traditional, communion offered.

Holiday light recycling – The ability to recycle used holiday lights will be offered at White’s Ace Hardware, 731 S. Range Line Rd, from now through the end of January. Free science lectures – Anderson University’s School of Science and Engineering is offering a series of lectures that are free and open to the public. Scholarships available – Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Indiana Scholarship Program offers students the opportunity to apply for one of four scholarships honoring the applicant’s heritage to celebrate the growing diversity in Indiana. Applications are being accepted from eligible high school seniors in one of four ethnic categories: Asian, Hispanic, African-American and all others. Applications are due by Jan. 18.
