The Town Council met Nov. 28 to discuss the wastewater department budget and internal controls to help reduce the risk of fraud.
What happened: The council approved the 2017 wastewater department and utility budget.
What it means: The approved budget is 6.5 percent bigger than last year’s and does not include an increase in the sewer rate. Additional funds are expected to be generated by the approximately 800 new homes expected to be added to the town’s sewer system in the coming years. The budget also includes a new collections operator position added in anticipation of future growth.
What’s next: Upcoming wastewater projects include bank stabilization and added security at the wastewater treatment plant.
What happened: The council unanimously approved an ordinance adopting internal control standards for the town.
What it means: The State Board of Accounts requires that municipalities adopt internal control standards, which include policies to reduce the risk of fraud, theft and errors. It also is designed to provide procedures to help the town run efficiently.
What’s next: The ordinance passed on final reading and is now in effect.
