Salon 01 will host a cut-a-thon to benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society from 8 a.m. to noon Oct. 24.
One hundred percent of the proceeds from the Salon 01 cut-a-thon will go to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Haircuts are available for a $25 donation. Nail polish changes, chair massages and eyebrow waxing are available for a suggested donation of $5.
There will be 25 stylists available for the cut-a-thon. Services are provided on a first-come, first-serve basis and the event is walk-in only.
For the event, Salon 01 teamed up with client Sylvia Kemp, one of the many crusaders dedicated to MS awareness and a volunteer for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. A former nurse in pediatric oncology, Kemp has had MS for 24 years.
Kemp described MS as a very unpredictable, silent and invisible disease for many. For Kemp, MS presented itself in several ways – affecting her energy, vision, cognition and nervous system.
Kemp said when she was initially diagnosed with MS, there were no disease-modifying drugs available.
“It’s a different world for people who were just diagnosed with MS,” Kemp said. “The research is so valuable, and we are hoping for a world without MS.”
On difficult days, Kemp said she recites to herself a quote from writer Mary Ann Radmacher: “Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says, ‘I’ll try again tomorrow.’”
Kemp believes this quote can be helpful for many people, for a variety of challenges in life.
Kemp coordinates MS awareness event and fundraisers throughout the year. Her MS Society walk team, MiSion Possible, is the second highest fundraising team in Illinois. Upon returning to Indiana, Kemp said the first call she made was to the National MS Society to start a MiSion Possible team in Indiana.
“I’m hopeful the community will help make our MiSsion Possible,” Kemp said.
