Dog wash will benefit prisoners and former facing Greyhounds

Pet Supplies Plus will host a benefit dog wash from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 15 and 16.

Volunteers will wash customers’ dogs and trim their nails. Proceeds are being donated to Prison Greyhounds, a local Greyhound adoption group that fosters retired racers with non-violent, inmate handlers at Putnamville Correctional Facility in Greencastle, Ind.

The program provides a solution to the great need for foster homes willing to take a racing Greyhound and teach him or her to be a family pet. The inmate handlers gain teamwork, patience, canine-handling skills and a new best friend, who becomes their motivation to be on their best behavior.

There are two Pet Supplies Plus locations hosting this event: Noblesville and Broad Ripple. The $10 dog wash is for all breeds. Nails trims are $6. Prison Greyhounds is funded entirely by donations and their own fundraising efforts. No tax money is spent, and the program is free to the prison.
