Carmel Redevelopment Commission announces new hire, land purchase

The Carmel Redevelopment Commission announced several major moves, including the hiring of a new deputy director, the purchase of land and demolition underway in the Midtown area, in a Sept. 19  update to the Carmel City Council.

New deputy director: Michael Frischkorn, deputy director of economic development for Anderson, Ind., is the new deputy director for the CRC . He was  hired in August.

PNC lot progress. The CRC closed on its purchase of 30 E. Main Street, the building located west of Woody’s Library’s Restaurant, which will  be demolished to allow for a new mixed-use development where the PNC Bank currently has its parking lot. The CRC paid $752,000 for the building, which is an office space for attorneys and others.

Demolition of Midtown area. The CRC entered into a contract to demolish a portion of the future Midtown development site along the Monon Trail, which may be reimbursed with the Midtown Bond proceeds. Demolition is underway on the site where the Allied Solutions headquarters will be located, along with a newly announced Sun King Brewery and Distillery location.

Construction underway on City Center. Two projects, the park east parking garage and the Baldwin/Chambers buildings, are both underway, with ground already broken and construction equipment on site. The five-story parking structure will have no less than 728 parking spaces and will include up to approximately 28,000 square feet of commercial retail/office space. Wilhelm was selected as the design-build contractor. Construction will be completed by May 2017. Baldwin/Chambers is a four-story building with approximately 64,000 square feet of space for luxury apartments and commercial retail/office space. Pedcor is working with four commercial businesses that will occupy approximately 14,000 square feet of the commercial space.

Other news:

  • The City Center Phase II bonds and the Midtown East bonds closed in August.
  • Sophia Square Plaza was completed in August.
  • Barrett & Stokely and Merchants Bank purchased a 3rd Avenue warehouse property from the CRC.
