Danny Kingston was just a freshman at Westfield High School when he first played the role of Jack in the Tony Award-winning “Into the Woods.”

But since graduating from WHS 10 years ago, Kingston has studied theater at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City. Now, he gets his chance to show audiences how far he has come when the musical opens at the Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre Oct. 6 for 49 performances through Nov. 20.

“I’m really looking forward to revisiting the role of Jack,” said Kingston, who still resides in Westfield. “After the training in New York City, I can’t wait to get back into this role after learning a couple of things or two.”

Kingston said “Into the Woods” has “always had a special place in my heart” since his role in high school.

“There are so many levels to the show. It’s very intricate with very good themes all across the board,” Kingston said. “Playing Jack really solidified my love for musical theater.”

Originally opening on Broadway in 1987, the musical earned Tony Awards for score by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine.

The musical intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm and Charles Perrault fairy tales with the main characters taken from “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Jack and the Beanstalk,” “Rapunzel,” “Cinderella” and others. It is tied together by a story involving a childless baker and his wife and their quest to begin a family, their interaction with a witch who has placed a curse on them and their interaction with other storybook characters during their journey.

“I know some of the people in the cast and they are phenomenal,” Kingsley said. “A lot of them I’ve worked with before, and I am anxious to work with them again.”

Then he jokingly added, “They did a great job of casting, if I do say so myself.”
