Upon arrival, Officers Derek Loyal and Aaron Tate observed the lights on inside the business. Observing a male inside the restaurant, who was wearing a red T-shirt over his face, Tate and Loyal discovered the lower left window of the exterior door leading to the kitchen area had been broken out. As they were getting ready to make entry, the lone burglar walked out of the business. Loyal and Tate said they observed three bottles of liquor in his left hand.

A press release from LPD states Tate and Loyal verbally shouted, “Lawrence Police, show us your hands” multiple times to the individual, who eventually dropped the bottles but failed to show both officers his right hand.

Loyal and Tate said they observed the suspect concealing a dark-colored object with his right hand next to his body. The suspect eventually showed Tate and Loyal both of his hands, and as he did so, they observed a crowbar fall to the ground from the right side of the suspect. Officers then placed him in custody. No one else was discovered inside the restaurant.

The suspect was identified as Joey Wilson, 47. Police said a review of Wilson’s criminal history reveals he was recently released from prison and has five convictions for burglary in three counties, along with other criminal convictions. He was transported to the Arrestee Processing Center on a preliminary charge of Level 4 Felony Burglary.
