The Zionsville Town Council met Sept. 6 to hear from a state senator and discuss the expansion of Hoosier Village retirement community.

What happened: State Sen. Brandt Hershman spoke to the council about infrastructure and economic development.

What it means: Hershman presented information about a task force looking at how to best fund roads in the future, specifically as revenues from gasoline taxes drop as sales decrease. He said two common options are to raise taxes or cut spending in other areas, but he also believes growing the economy is a solution to generate more revenue. He praised the town for its efforts to expand its tax base, saying it’s “done far better than many other places around the country.”

What happened: The council unanimously approved a resolution to move $65,000 from the general fund to reimburse the Zionsville Plan Commission.

What it means: The “pass-through” funds were received from developers for engineering work done on behalf of the town and its Planning and Economic Development Dept. and will be reimbursed the plan commission.

What happened: The council introduced an ordinance to rezone 68.6 acres from R-SF-2 Urban Residential to SU-7 Special Use Zoning for a residential housing development for seniors.

What it means: This will be an extension of the existing Hoosier Village retirement community, including 156 duplexes and seven estate lots. The plan also includes a pocket park, garden area, dog park, pavilion and trails.

What’s next: The council is expected to vote on the ordinance at a future meeting.
