Safest cities – Protection1 Security Solutions recently conducted a study to determine the safest cities in Indiana. The rankings were based on the FBI uniform crime reports from 2014. Carmel ranked fourth in the state with only 9.5 violent or property crimes per 1,000 residents.

Drive Sober campaign – The 2016 Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign has begun and will run through Sept. 5. Local law enforcement will work overtime to conduct sobriety patrols and checkpoints around the clock. Hamilton County joins thousands of law enforcement agencies across the country in this campaign.
Native tree sale – The Hamilton County Soil and Water Conservation District is holding its annual native tree sale. Trees are $25 and will be approximately -3 to 5-feet tall at delivery. Orders are due Sept. 3. Trees can be picked up Sept. 9 from 2 to 6:00 p.m. at the Hamilton County 4-H Fairgrounds llama barn. Online ordering and payment is available at www.hamiltonswcd.org.
New area code – Beginning Oct. 17, all new phone numbers assigned within the 317 area will receive the new 463 area code. This will not affect existing phone numbers. Ten-digit dialing will continue to be necessary for local calls to be completed. For more information, visit www.att.com/areacode.
Pup Running registration – Carmel Pup Running cross country registration closes Aug. 17. Pup Running is open to all CCS 4th and 5th graders. The season runs from Aug. 21 – Sept. 27. Breakfast Club – The Hamilton County GOP Breakfast Club will meet at 7:30 a.m. on Aug. 18 at Market District, 11505 N. Illinois St., Carmel. Republican nominee for Lt. Family friendly city – Carmel has ranked fifth in a national study to determine the best small cities for families. Rankings were based on home value, affordability, median annual income, growth, school quality, crime and other factors.

Paralegals sworn in – The Indiana Paralegal Association, Inc. recently held its annual swearing in and awards ceremony at the Sheraton Indianapolis City Center. Jamie Collins of Carmel was sworn in as the ethics director. Collins will serve a one-year term.
Civil War Roundtable – The Hamilton County Civil War Roundtable will meet at 7 p.m. Sept. 14 at Carmel City Hall. Ray Boomhower, senior editor for the Indiana Historical Society Press and author will be speaker. The public is invited and admission is free.
Democratic Women meeting – The Democratic Women of Hamilton County will hold its next meeting at 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 20 at the Delaware Township Community Building, 9090 E. 131st St., Fishers. Leslie Barnes will speak about basic civics and election related topics. Bring a canned food item for the food pantry.
Rain on Main auction – Rain on Main, a painted rain barrel art competition and silent auction, will return to the Carmel Farmer’s Market from 8 to 11 a.m. on Aug. 20. Twenty local artists have painted rain barrels for this event. The barrels will be on display in the Arts & Design District until Aug. 19. The public can then bid for their favorites in the auction. Arts and crafts vendors needed – Applications for artists and crafters at St. Mark’s United Methodist Women’s 2016 Holiday Arts & Crafts Marketplace on Nov. 5 are now being accepted. Marathon registration open – Registration is now open for the seventh annual Carmel Marathon, to be held April 22, 2017. Early bird registration fees are available for full marathon, half marathon, 8K run and 5K run. This is the second largest marathon in the state. Intersection closure – The intersection of Carmel Drive and Range Line Road will be closed beginning Aug. 15 until approximately mid-November for construction of a roundabout. Coding documentary – Diversity is needed in the IT community. A new documentary, CODE: Debugging the Gender Gap, explores this issue and shows how to close the gap. Cinch Cycling at Rollfast – Pro cyclist Tom Danielson will attend the Rollfast Gran Fondo in Carmel on Sept. 18. Danielson has started a new business called Cinch Cycling and focuses on training camps, clinics and coaching. Danielson will bring the Cinch Cycling experience to Carmel. Road closure – Rolling Springs Drive will remain closed until approximately Aug. 29 due to the culvert replacement. Detour for this project consists of 116th Street and East Carmel Drive and the utilization of Keystone Parkway.
