PLAY dates at Brookside – Northview Church has partnered with Brookside Community Church on an initiative called Brookside Community PLAY. The goal is to give kids and their parents a comfortable and safe community environment to reap the mental and emotional benefits that play can give to children, such as creativity, problem-solving, teamwork and leadership skills. PLAY events will be held 5 to 8 p.m. July 19 and 26 at Brookside Park, 3500 Brookside Pkwy., Indianapolis.
Touch a Truck – Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation will host its annual Touch a Truck event from 10 a.m. to noon July 20 in the Carmel High School stadium parking lot. Cost is $3 per child. Children younger than 2 and adults are admitted free. Children will have the opportunity to interact with vehicles that include a helicopter, school bus, Humvee, command center and more. Locker room theft – Carmel police are searching for a suspect who allegedly took car keys from the LA Fitness locker room on Workout Way in Carmel and use them to open vehicles and steal electronics and wallets. Police said he later used victims’ credit cards at a nearby Wal-Mart. The suspect is described as a white male with short, dark hair and a chinstrap beard. Carmel woman pleads guilty – Carmel resident Michelle Roberts, 56, pled guilty in Marion County Criminal Court Two to unemployment insurance fraud, a Class C Felony. An Indiana Dept. of Workforce Development employee began an investigation in response to an employer protest that Roberts was working and receiving wages while claiming unemployment insurance benefits. Roberts paid $7,156 in restitution for the benefits she fraudulently collected.
Guild authors to be named – Excitement has been building for the 12th annual Guild Book & Author events hosted by the Guild of the Carmel Clay Public Library Foundation. The six award-winning, nationally known authors will be revealed at 11 a.m. July 20 in the Program Room at the Carmel Clay Public Library. Road closure – Rolling Springs Drive will remain closed until approximately Aug. 29 due to the culvert replacement. Detour for this project consists of 116th Street and East Carmel Drive and the utilization of Keystone Parkway.
Lane restrictions – Children’s Adventure Learning Center, 116th Street and College Drive, is adding diagonal on/off street parking, a small median, and a multiuse path to the west side of the property. This will result in some lane restrictions to the northbound lane of College Drive, north of 116th Street for approximately three weeks until the completion of the project.
Rain barrel painting contest – Rain on Main is back! Local artists are again invited to paint a rain barrel for this unique event. Patient Advisory Council members needed – St.Vincent is seeking volunteers in the community to serve on the Patient Family Advisory Council. Backpack giveaway – TCC, the largest Verizon Authorized Retailer in the U.S., and A Wireless are teaming up to donate 235,000 backpacks full of school supplies to children through TCC’s annual School Rocks Backpack Giveaway. Between noon and 3 p.m. July 30, local families are invited to visit TCC at 1532 S. Range Line Rd. to pick up a backpack filled with school supplies. One backpack per child present will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.
Book signing – The Carmel Dairy Queen will host a book signing event 2 to 5 p.m. July 30. Featured will be local author Debra Haskett May and her newly released book, “Legendary Locals of Carmel.” May will sign books available for sale at the event as well as those purchased elsewhere if attendees wish to bring them. Books for sale at the event are $20, sales tax included.
Parkinson’s support group – The Climb, which is an exercise program of the Indiana Parkinson Foundation, holds a monthly support group to provide information on various topics for those with Parkinson’s or Parkinsonisms as well as their caregivers/families/friends. Tennis championship results – The United States Tennis Association Midwest Section Closed Junior Championships recently ended with several Carmel players reaching the finals. Cole Shoults was a finalist in the Boys 16 doubles. Nishanth and Nishesh Basavareddy were finalists in the Boys 14 doubles. Soren Leichter was a Girls 14 doubles finalist.
Funds raised for JDRF – ADESA, a business unit of KAR Auction Services, announced that the ADESA Indianapolis auction recently hosted two charity events. Together, these two events raised more than $34,000 for JDRF, a leading advocacy group for people with Type 1 diabetes.
