The owners of The Quirky Feather Confectionary, at 890 E. 116th St. in Carmel, have decided to expand the business’ menu by adding beer, wine and liquor.

The coffee shop and bakery opened earlier this year, and is known for staying open late. The shop is open until midnight six days a week (closed on Tuesdays) to provide a “bar alternative” for Carmel.

Co-owner Sabrina Wernicke talked to Current in Carmel about their decision to buy a liquor license so customers and order a little Baileys for their coffee.

Q: What made you want to look into buying a liquor license?

A: Our vision for The Quirky Feather always included having a liquor license, so when the opportunity to get one came up we decided to go for it.

Q: What will you offer?

A: We will offer a small selection of local craft beers and a few wine options but what we are most excited about is the opportunity to offer signature cocktails We have had tons of fun playing around with infusing flavors and creating unique drinks. We will also be offering the classics such as Irish coffee. There will be drinks that might seem a bit, well, quirky. I don’t want to give away too much but I hope that people are as excited by Boozy Boba Tea as we are!

Q: What discussions were had about how to keep the current feel and not turn the place into a bar?

A: This was really important to us. We love the laid back feel of the feather and that how everyone feels welcome and comfortable. A few months ago we posted on our Facebook page asking our customers how they would feel about the option of having a cocktail or glass of wine with their desserts and the response was overwhelmingly positive. We are not turning into a bar, all our drinks will be mixed and poured in the kitchen and then served to the tables just like other restaurants.

Q: I know they can be costly. Was that part of your discussion? Did it take some time to search for one at the right price? 

A: Cost was a huge part of the discussion but with the advice of another local restaurant owner we were able to find an excellent price.

Q: I know you are a comfortable safe place for high schooler students and young children, is there anything you need to do so you can still serve them from in the same space? Is there anything policy was so you remain your family friendly feel?

A: One of the unique laws in Indiana is that as long as we don’t pass drinks over a counter we are not a bar and therefore do not have to have separate seating that is restricted to people who are over 21. We will be serving directly to people’s tables so there will be no restrictions about who can sit in certain areas. We are still going to be a bar-alternative. A place where people can come and sit together and enjoy discussion of come on their own to read or work. The drinks will just enhance the flavors and add to the experience.
