Jeremy Miller of Westfield is making it his mission to assist single-family homes with lowering property tax.

Miller and his business, Appeal Taxes Now, are level-three accessors that work for the tax payer.

“Our job is to help the taxpayer find out if their property should be lowered in tax value because tax payments are based on their value,” Miller said. “In 2009, the government changed the way taxing is on real estate so homeowners have a 1 percent cap, investors have a 2 percent cap and commercial has a 3 percent cap.”

Miller and his partner, Marshall Welton, review the property and discover if the property value should be reduced, therefore reducing the property tax.

“What makes us a little bit unique in this field is there are not a lot of tax reps that get into single-family properties. We do a large amount of single family,” Miller said.

Miller hands the single-family properties, and Welton handles commercial properties.

Appeal Taxes Now has a variety of payment options, and Miller said most clients use the option of paying 50 percent of what they save. Clients do not pay if Miller doesn’t succeed.

“If you don’t contest the value on the property, then the county doesn’t change it,” he said. “They only give you a short time window to do it.”

Miller is also a real estate broker and has two children in the Westfield Washington school system.

“What I like is when somebody buys a property, the taxes end up being the biggest expense for the property itself,” Miller said. “Somebody that’s using their IRA money or cash or borrowing money is giving it the county when they shouldn’t have to. I like being able to help our clients save money from that standpoint.”
