Christmas may be over, but those wanting to experience the season a bit longer can check out a new holiday mystery by local author R.L. Perry.

The first of an anticipated 12-book series, “Slay Bells” combines romance, mystery and fun.

“The central character, the protagonist in the novels, is a mortician, funeral director, by the name of Mary Christmas,” said Perry, who lives near Zionsville. “She always gets involved in some mystery, murder mystery usually, then over the course of the holiday season has to solve the mystery.”

Perry has been interested in writing since high school. He grew up in a small town just south of Terre Haute and initially tried his hand at creative writing, including poetry and satirical pieces.

“I think early on most of my writing was probably done to make my friends laugh. So, I did a lot of humor and then, when I got into college, I was writing a lot more essays, non-fiction and reflections on various subjects,” Perry said. “And, it just kind of grew from there.”

After high school, Perry attended Indiana State University where he was a creative writing major. Now he enjoys combining different genres together.

“Slay Bells” is available online at barnesandnoble.com or amazon.com and on Kindle. The next two novels in the series, “Bleak Midwinter” and “Cold Snap” are expected to be released in 2016.
