Community Foundation of Boone County workshop to help families prepare for cost of college

By Joseph Knoop

For many Indiana students, affording higher education can be a struggle. One organization hopes to provide a resource for struggling families to assess their options when considering a college for their child.

Students in grades 7 through 12 can register for the College Cost Estimator workshop organized by the Community Foundation of Boone County held at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 1 at Zionsville Community High School, 1000 Mulberry St.

“It’s an interesting process in how the reports that come back illustrate to families that there are ways they can pay for college they may not have realized or expected,” said Gabi Youran, Community Foundation of Boone County’s director of community relations.

The free workshops helps parents and students recognize which educational institutions best fit their financial and educational needs. The online College Cost Estimator form provides workshop organizers with individual student profiles to better assist. Registered students also receive free access to financial coaching from the National Center for College Costs through the end of their college career.

Youran hopes that area students see a direct benefit from the workshop.

“There are struggles with poverty in certain areas. We’re trying to help people pull themselves up and out of poverty,” Youran said. “It’s funny. We talk to our counselors, and they’re some of the most excited.”

The Boone County poverty rate was recorded at 7.5 percent from 2009 to 2013, according the U.S. Census Bureau.

Attendees are encouraged to register at least one day before the workshop at Attendees are also encouraged to fill out their own college cost estimator form at
