Teresa Ray started The Payroll Department as a part-time business nearly 26 years ago. The Brownsburg business developed into a full-time pursuit quickly. Ray, president and owner, has long thought about expanding the office, but couldn’t find the right spot. In August, she found the perfect place in Zionsville.

The Payroll Department opened a remote sales office at 88 N. First Street on Sept. 29.

“We don’t want to over-expand ourselves to where we grow too big,” said Ray, whose Brownsburg office is at 701 N. Green St. “I’ll be here working part-time in the Zionsville area, and as this area grows our office will grow.”

The Payroll Department processes payroll for small to mid-sized businesses, both in Indiana and out of state.

“We’re a full service payroll company,” Ray said. “We’re going to process the payroll, do the taxes, pay income taxes, do W2s, the whole thing.”

Ray said her business is well known in Hendricks County, but this should develop more exposure in Boone and Hamilton counties.

“I wanted to expand into a different area and, hopefully, in the future maybe even franchise the business,” Ray said. “I’ll be the only one working here until it grows. I love it. The people and (Zionsville) Chamber have been extremely receptive to us. I love meeting new people, so this is a great opportunity for me.”

The Payroll Department is a tenant in the office space with Accounting Solutions Plus, which was opened by Jessica Brockway on Sept. 29. She previously had her business at home. She has been in business for six years. Her staff includes Kathy Flanigan, bookkeeper, and Christy Brooks, assistant controller.

Ray and Brockway have known each other for several years.

“We’ve been business associates and referral partners for years,” Brockway said. “There is good synergy there.”
