Dr. Stephen Elliott and his wife Linda are adding a health care service to their practice. Medical Thermography of Hamilton County opened on Sept. 30 at 11979 Fishers Crossing Dr., Fishers, in the same building as Living With Intention, a medical and counseling practice the Elliotts started in 2008.

Linda is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and one of the counselors at LWI, in addition to serving as the executive director. Dr. Elliott is a certified family practitioner.

“Medical Thermography is an imagining technology that involves no radiation, and so in that sense it offers a safety benefit over X-rays and CAT scans,” Dr. Elliott said. “It actually measures infrared radiation. We know the amount of infrared radiation given off by any particular area of the body reflects the heat patterns deeper within that tissue. Medical Thermography is a way of imaging the body to find problems before they become visible on mammograms or CT scans or X-rays. It doesn’t look for structural abnormalities, it looks for functional abnormalities.”

Dr. Elliott said the most common use for medical thermography is imaging breasts.

“Whatever has been growing there has been growing for many, many years. Long before that happens we’ll see areas of the breast that are getting hotter than the areas around them,” Dr. Elliott said. “So it’s a way of measuring heat that allows us an earlier detection.”

Thermography is not a replacement for mammograms, Dr. Elliott stressed.

They are two different forms of breast imaging, and a thermogram cannot be used to diagnose cancer.

Dr. Elliott said medical thermography is more than 30 years old, but what has changed is the software and the technology of the camera has improved.
