Opinion: The introduction of a new girlfriend … pigfriend

0

First, we learned that Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy had broken up. That was tough enough. But to learn now that Kermit has a new girlfriend … well, the mind reels.

Shows you what kind of world we live in when the most compelling story of the day has to do with the love lives of Muppets. OK, maybe it was the most compelling story of MY day and I’m the only one talking about it. But I think it’s a great story even if it IS made up and about puppets.

Here’s the deal:

The Muppets are coming back to television. Hooray. I mean it. Cue the fireworks. This is cause for great celebration.

The show begins Sept. 22 on ABC and will be in a new format – well, new for them, anyway. Gone is the old variety show and replacing it is a docu-series showing the behind-the-scenes story of that new fake late night show, “Up Late With Miss Piggy.”

According to the promos and press releases, Kermit and Piggy may no longer be an item (although after 40 years together you’d think they’d qualify to be more than an Item and be awarded full Couple status) but they’re working together on the show.

Oh, the drama. Oh, the intrigue. Oh, brother is he in for it.

Especially now that a certain attractive (their words) new pig has been seen around town with Kermit – a network executive named Denise, who has a more-than-passing resemblance to a certain pig we all know and some of us love, although Denise is a redhead, not a blonde like you-know-who.

(I understand Piggy has been seen in the company of the actor Liam Hemsworth, so it looks like neither pig nor frog is letting the grass grow under his or her foam rubber feet.)

Kermit, of course, is denying that Denise is his new girlfriend. In a quote I just love he said:

“While I prefer to keep my personal life private, this is Hollywood, so who am I kidding?  It is true that I am dating again. However, at this time no one woman — pig or otherwise — is my official ‘new girlfriend.’ We are simply close friends.”

I also love what he said when he was asked if it was difficult to work with his ex:

“It’s not as easy as being green, I’ll tell you that.”

I tell you, this is going to be some Must-See TV, to borrow a phrase from a long ago promotion on another network.

For one thing, it’s the Muppets, which means it’s going to be funny. It’ll include characters I love, like Gonzo and Fozzie and Animal and Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and his lab assistant, Beaker. And being, as I said, a made-up show about puppets, it’s likely to come closer to truth than most of the stuff that’s on TV under the guise of so-called “reality” programming.

Which gets me back to this being the most compelling story of the day. I don’t know about you, but these days I need a few laughs with some congenial characters – ok, congenial except for Kermit and Miss Piggy. And since conflict creates comedy, the introduction of a new girlfriend … pigfriend … significant other species certainly looks like it has potential to be funny.

That’ll compel me to tune in.
