When the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra called, David Heady and other artists listened.
Heady, a Fishers resident, is the vice president of promotions and partnerships for Hamilton County Artists Association.
The ISO proposed holding Pictures at an Exhibition as part of Marsh Symphony on the Prairie and HCAA agreed. The event will be held at 8 p.m. on June 26 at Conner Prairie in Fishers.
“There’s no better way to bring that experience to life than to have working artists, on site, painting while being inspired by what they hear,” said Jessica Di Santo, communications director for ISO. “It’s a grand tradition to form collaborative relationships between performing arts and visual arts – so many composers were inspired by artists living in their time and vice versa. Why not continue the tradition.”
Artists will be pathways that go around the upper rim of the amphitheater
“I think we’ll have a good showing,” Heady said. “There are 30 spots and I think we’re coming close to filling that.”
The 65-year-old Heady’s specialty is portraits. His artwork can be found on DavidHeady.com
“It’s sort of the draw what you hear or paint what you hear spirit of it,” Heady said. “The artists have free reign to do what they want.”
The artists are not allowed to sell anything there. Heady said he might do quick sketches for free.
“I also want to showcase my pastel work,” Heady said. “I might work on pastel portrait there but not of someone who is there.”
Heady said the artists being there will be good exposure for the HCAA.
“The Indianapolis Symphony seems to think it will add the whole experience of being at the symphony,” he said.
Di Santo said it was a natural fit for the ISO to reach out to the HCAA for this project.
“It’s an organization filled with enthusiastic, talented artists ready for our ambitious goal – to paint plein air while listening to great classical works,” she said “Patrons will love to watch the process and the outcome. And even if a painter doesn’t complete his/her creation on site, that’s fine, because we’ll present the entire exhibit in our Hilbert Circle Theatre home next April, during the weekend when we, once again, perform Pictures at an Exhibition.”
The rain date for the concert is June 27. Fawzi Haimor will be the conductor with Nareh Argmhanyan on piano. Tickets are $29 for adults and $14 for children. Advance tickets are available at IndianapolisSymphony.org and at Marsh stores with a Fresh Idea card. Gate opens at 6 p.m.
