After more than 30 years in existence, Fire Station 44 on Carmel’s Northeast side is no more. The station, located at 5032 E. Main Street, across from the Carmel Clay Schools Administration Building was demolished on June 8 to make way for a new fire station to be built in its place.
Firefighters are currently working out of nearby house that was available for rent, according to Joel Heavner, a spokesman for the Carmel Fire Department. A temporary barn was built to house the engine and Heavner said all equipment and operations have been accounted for. Ambulances will be located at other fire stations though, but he said that hasn’t noticeably changed any response time.
The new station, which should cost $3.5 million, will be paid for through existing Clay Township funds and tax revenues without creating any additional taxes. Construction should be complete by July 2016. The new station will have more room, including separate space for male and female firefighters.
