Gov. Mike Pence recently appointed Zionsville resident Dr. Vince Bertram to the State Board of Education, which is responsible for authorizing school funding, overseeing the state-wide accountability system and intervening in struggling schools. The board seeks members who are highly skilled in the field of education.

Bertram’s career as teacher, principle and superintendent of the state’s third-largest school district provided the background necessary to be appointed to the board. He is currently president and chief executive officer of Project Lead the Way, a leading provider of science, technology, engineering and mathematics curriculum.

“I think I bring a perspective of a deep understanding of K12 education and education policy as well as the challenges schools confront on a daily basis,” Bertram said.

Bertram, 47, hopes to enhance the educational experience for Indiana students and support those who help make that experience possible. Bertram will serve on the board for two years before going up for potential reappointment.

“Teaching and school leadership are very difficult and challenging, but at the same time there is an enormous opportunity to help advance not only the student’s experience but also Indiana’s economy and shaping our future,” Bertram said. “It’s going to be done through education, and I want to be a part of that.”

Bertram, an Indiana native, moved to Zionsville after living in New York, where Project Lead the Way was headquartered. When the company moved to Indianapolis his family chose Zionsville to call home.

“We love living in Zionsville,” Bertram said. “It’s a great community and it’s been a wonderful experience for our children.”
