Ludwig

Dr. Kandice Ludwig was recently named as the new medical director of the breast care program for Indiana University Health’s North Central Region. We recently caught up with Ludwig to discuss her new role, family life and women’s health.

Q.  How old are you?

A. I am 38.

Q. Are you married?

A. I am. My husband’s name is Aaron Ludwig.

Q. Do you have kids?

A. We do. We have Harper who is 3 and Nolan who is 2.

Q. Tell me a little about your promotion at IU Health.

A. So, I have been with IU Health as a breast surgeon for 5 years. Up to this point I’ve been balancing time between IU North and the Simon Cancer Center. Dr. Kennedy, who is my partner, had been medical director at IU North for almost 10 years. She had decided to leave us. She is closing her practice and moving to New York to be close to her family. So, I was asked to take on the role as medical director.

Q. Tell me about the role of a medical director.

A. It’s really three-fold. I oversee some of the day-to day operations of the actual clinic-making sure we have appropriate staff coverage, making sure the other providers that see patients in our suite are taken care of and quality improvement. I have a great staff and we get to do a lot of programmatic changes and long-term growth. I do that on top of seeing patients and operating.

Q. Why did you become a doctor?

A. It’s kind of something I always wanted to be. My mom was a science teacher and so science was always a big influence in our household. She was always growing things. She really made science fun. All three of us went into science related fields. I truly believe she was the main reason we all did what we did.

Q. How did you get into women’s health?

A. When I was in college I started getting interested in women’s health. I worked at the wellness education department. That’s what really opened my interest in women’s health. I thought I wanted to be a gynecologist but when I did my surgery rotation I fell in love with surgery.

Q. What motivate you in regards to women’s health?

A. A lot of what we do as breast surgeons, we do take care of lot of women with breast cancer but that isn’t all we do. We do a lot of counseling about risk. We do a lot of health maintenance things. We do diagnose breast disease but it’s really kind of the whole patient we take care of.

Q. What do you think women need to know about breast health?

A. Awareness is really the biggest thing. We still see women with locally advanced breast cancer that were either in denial or just weren’t aware that this could be something that’s abnormal. Women need to talk to their doctors. They need to know how often they should come in for examinations. Being proactive. It’s kind of two parts…awareness and yet talking to the doctors to see where they are in their level of risk.

Q. What do you do in your spare time?

A. My main focus at this point outside of work is being a mom. I’m an avid fitness fiend. I’m usually at the gym three to four times a week. My husband is wonderful in that he watches the kiddos so that I can get a fitness class in here or there. It helps keep me sane. I read a lot. I enjoy cooking so I’m always trying to find new recipes.

Q. Do you have a favorite place to go in Fishers?

A. We’ve been going to Hamilton Town Center a lot.

Q. Favorite vacation spot?

A. My favorite place that we’ve ever been is Italy. We did our honeymoon there. It was the best place I’ve ever been in my entire life. I ate gelato 9 days in a row. It was just phenomenal. You know the architecture, the history…to think that things have been there for thousands of years and to walk places where popes have been was just phenomenal. Now that we have kids we go to the beach a lot. My hometown is New Orleans so we try to get back there as much as we can. The culture and the food is something that we love.
