In April, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation revealed the Achievement Scholarship winners, and one of them attends Zionsville Community High School.

Bryan Wilson, 17, is one of 800 seniors to earn the scholarship from a pool of about 150,000 students eligible to win the award, which is presented to African-American high school seniors.

Students become eligible for the competition by taking the PSAT and SAT. Finalists were selected based on consistently high academic performance, an endorsement from their school and through an essay.

“I have to thank my parents, they really pushed me to study for the PSATs,” Wilson said.

All of that studying paid off. Wilson said he expects the award will help him qualify for other scholarships.

Wilson’s parents also expressed their excitement at his recent achievement.

“His father and I are really proud of him,” said Maria Wilson, Wilson’s mother. “He is really good at setting goals and working to accomplish them. He worked really hard for this.”

Wilson plans on attending Arizona State to study pre-med and he hopes to become a doctor of neurology in the future.

Wilson said he likes to read and work out. Recently, he joined the men’s volleyball team at ZCHS. His favorite book is the Game of Thrones series, and he said he is currently reading the fourth one.
