Endurance House collecting used bike gear

Local bike and running shop Endurance House will be collecting used bikes, helmets, clothing and all related equipment to donate to nonprofit Freewheelin’ Community Bikes.

“It’s good timing, with national bike month (in May), Earth day, spring cleaning…” said Sarah Speicher, Endurance House’s Community Outreach Coordinator.

Anyone donating will receive a 10 percent discount on all items except bicycles.

Freewheelin’ Community Bikes uses bicycles to help those aged 10 – 18 to learn bike mechanics, riding and safety. Bikes are donated to serve as primary transportation to Indianapolis youth to emphasize fitness and leadership skills. They accept any cycling-related donations including wheels and kids items.

“It’s neat because even if you have some things you think are trash, they can fix up those items,” said Speicher, who encourages donation of all equipment regardless of age.

“We’re trying to find ways to help those who might not have access to the equipment we have,” said storeowner Jay Miller. “Hopefully it will be something that can continue in the future.”

“We sponsor a number of races, but to be able to help a group like Freewheelin’,” said Miller, “it’s like teaching them to fish.”

Members of Dow AgroSciences Agrocyclists group will assist with the collection.

“Whenever we can find events and help the community at the same time, that’s win-win for everybody,” said Miller.

Bike equipment collection will take place at Endurance House in Fishers on Saturday April 25 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

With May being national bike month, Endurance House will host bike maintenance clinics at both of their retail locations. In Fishers, the clinic will be held on May 9 at 3 p.m. and May 13 at 6 p.m., with the Zionsville location hosting clinics on May 7 at 6 p.m. and May 9 at 11 a.m. It’s an informal opportunity to learn basic bicycle needs such as changing a tire, plus learn basic bike safety.
