Civic Theatre’s Young Adult Program workshops now available for Dec. 30

Civic Theatre’s Young Adult Program  will host two repertoire- building workshops led by outside industry professionals for eighth grade and high school students on Tuesday, December 30. The workshops are designed to give students an opportunity to learn skills not normally available in their high school theatre classes.

“Theatre education offerings vary widely among local high schools,” said YAP Coordinator, Kelly Butler- Smith. “Some high schools do not even offer theatre classes. Civic offers these workshops in order to give any high school student in the area who has an interest in theatre the opportunity to learn new skills and improve existing ones.”

The first workshop will focus on musical theatre and is led by Max Chucker, an experienced actor from the recent national tour of West Side Story. Returning to Civic for a second time, Chucker hosted one of YAP’s most successful workshops in 2013. On December 30 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., students will be taught dance combinations with an emphasis on tap. The lesson will be promptly followed with a question and answer session.

YAP’s second winter break workshop, titled “Breaking into Disney” will be taught by Emmy Buckner, an actress currently appearing on Disney’s hit show, “Liv and Maddie.” This workshop will take place from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and will help students identify and develop skills needed to be cast either as a theme park character or as an equity performer in one of the mainstage shows at Walt Disney World.

“Emmy is bringing the actual material she was given for her Disney Channel audition,” said Butler-Smith. “Students will have a chance to read it, giving them a close look as to what a Disney audition is like.”

Each class has a limited enrollment of 25 students and costs $25. No prior experience or involvement with Civic Theatre is necessary. The enrollment form can be found on Civic’s website at http://www.civictheatre.org/education/young-adult-program/yap-workshops/. Completed forms can be scanned and emailed to [email protected] or faxed to 317-853-6437. Additional YAP workshops will be available in January, March and April.
