A Noblesville Community Service Officer is in the hospital after being struck by a passing motorist while trying to assist a stranded one tonight.

At 7 p.m. Dec. 16, Noblesville police officers and a community service officer responded to the area of Eighth and Mulberry streets near downtown in reference to a report of a stranded motorist complaint. Officers arrived on the scene a short time later and began to investigate.

Upon arriving on the scene, CSO Terry Jewell parked her vehicle in the south bound lane of Eighth Street and activated the emergency lights on her vehicle. NPS Spokesman Lt. Bruce Barnes said she then exited her vehicle and prepared to provide traffic direction at the scene.

“Officer Jewell attempted to stop a 2007 BMW passenger vehicle that was traveling north bound on Eighth Street when she struck by the vehicle,” he stated. “Officer Jewell had a complaint of pain at the scene and was later transported by ground ambulance to Riverview Health (Noblesville). Officer Jewell indicated that she had pain to one of her legs and lower back.”

Barnes said there was little to no damage to the BMW and neither occupant reported any injuries.

Barnes said the NPD staffs two community service officers and they are primarily responsible for enforcing City of Noblesville ordinances associated with animals, parking and junk/abandoned vehicles. They also assist with stranded motorists, conduct vehicle lock-outs, and remove traffic hazards and debris from roadway, to name a few of their duties. CSOs are civilian employees.

CSO Jewell, 38, of Indianapolis, has been with the Noblesville Police Dept. since 2014.
