Shop for Kids: a Hamilton County success

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office annual Shop for Kids event took place Dec. 13, with more than 40 area youth receiving a special holiday shopping trip courtesy of the Sheriff’s Office.  While Hamilton County has the reputation of being the most affluent county in Indiana, there are still many family in need or down on their luck during the holiday season.  Sheriff’s Office deputies, officers, and employees strive year round to help meet the needs of the community and Shop for Kids is one of the highlights of the year in making the holiday season a little brighter for those who are less fortunate.

More than 40 kids, from infants and toddlers to high school students, were matched with employees of the Sheriff’s Office.  After meeting for donuts and juice, the participants were treated to rides in sheriff’s cars on their way to the Fishers Target store.  Once there, each child received $125 to spend on gifts and presents for themselves and their families.  Popular items included toy and games, dolls and action figures, stuffed animals, books, music, coats, gloves and hats, shoes, and other necessities.  Gifts for other family members were included as participants often thought of more than themselves.  For many, the experience of shopping with an officer was just as memorable as the items they purchased.

The Sheriff’s Office raises funds throughout the year to support the thousands of dollars needed for Shop for Kids. Funds come from area individuals and business owners as well as through volunteer fundraising efforts such as recent Sheriff’s Office employees serving as celebrity waiters at Logan’s Roadhouse.  A special thanks also goes to Target who supports the program not only through hosting the shopping event but also provides snacks and other items for the kids.  Those interested in assisting with Shop for Kids can send donations to Shop for Kids in care of the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office.
