The event may have been held to benefit the Carmel Clay Public Library, but the Ritz Charles was the place to be for the 10th Annual Guilded Leaf Book and Author Luncheon last month.

With the generous sponsorship of the Guggenheim Life and Annuity, two gorgeous ballrooms were filled with items donated for auction, copies of the books written by the attending authors, beautifully appointed tables for the gourmet lunch, and, most importantly, the dedicated members and supporters of the Guild.  Though it was the 10th year for the event to be held, this year marked the 100th anniversary of the library itself. The 10 years this event has been held have been fruitful -to put it mildly.  Fifty best-selling authors have come to talk, inspire, sign copies of their works, and enjoy themselves.

Julie Shadinger, the ex-officio Guild president, is delighted by this aspect.

“It gives the authors a chance to meet each other.  At typical signings authors have to rush from place to place.  At our event they are able to relax and enjoy themselves,” she said.

Both Shadinger and Jenny Purvis, this year’s event chairperson, have lots more to be excited about. The Guild has raised more than $500,000 to put toward children’s literacy programs at the library.  The event was populated with attendees who care about their community, education, and keeping the Carmel Clay Public Library the amazing resource that it is. Many volunteers were in attendance as well.

They devote their time, money, and energy the entire year-round so that fantastic authors like Elin Hilderbrand (who was unable to attend due to health issues), William Kent Krueger, Joanna Scott, Gail Sheehy, Troy Cummings, and Matthew Thomas can visit Carmel.
