Banquets are a time of celebration of the past, plans for the future and recognition for those who serve. For the past six years Carmel has been home to the Safe Families For Children of Central Indiana and their annual banquet. They have helped countless families in need. With the help of her team assistant director Beth Kinney, helped 253 children last year find temporary homes.
The program originated in Chicago in 2003. With the need of good homes for a community in crisis, founder and CEO David Anderson saw a need for Safe Families. When parents are dealing with unemployment, homelessness, or substance abuse they can turn to Safe Families in order to find temporary homes for their children while they seek the help they need. With a grant from the Oprah Winfrey Foundation in 2008, Anderson was able to expand his program beyond the Chicago’s city limits.
Now parents here in Indiana can receive the help they need through this program without losing custody of their children.
The annual banquet will be taking place at 6 p.m. Sept. 25 at Oak Hill Manor in Carmel. The public is welcome to join in the festivities and become a part of something special here in central Indiana. The theme this year is “What’s Your Story?” There will be no key speaker, but rather several families discussing their experiences with the program both as a host family and the parent in need.
“I have been with Safe Families for four years now and the banquet has always been a big celebration of all the work we have put in over the past year and what we need to accomplish in the next,” Kinney said.
