Ind. 32 closure in Westfield may last eight hours due to overturned tanker

Westfield Fire Chief Joe Lyons said a portion of Ind. 32 is closed in both directions in the city because of a tanker rollover. The closure is from Spring Mill Road on the east to Ditch Road on the west.

“Ind. 32 will be closed for several hours for the product to be offloaded and the truck uprighted,” Lyons said. “The truck is loaded with 7,500 gallons of diesel fuel. There has been minimal product spilled at this time.”

The diesel tanker is resting on a support beam of a utility pole. The tanker is not leaking fuel, but the tank needs to be emptied before it can be removed. Officials said Ind. 32 could be closed up to eight hours as crews work to empty the tanker and make sure the utility pole is secure.

Officials said the tanker was turning north on Casey Road trying to avoid hitting another vehicle when the driver overturned the vehicle. The driver was not injured in the accident.

“Please be patient as crews carefully and cautiously clean up the wreckage,” said Westfield Police Chief Joel Rush. “Luckily, no one was injured during the accident, but we want to make sure the clean-up is done properly to ensure everyone’s safety. Thank you for your patience.”
