Edible book contest – It’s time to eat your words. Create an edible book or come and help eat one. Any person or group who loves books, food and being creative is invited to enter this contest by creating something edible relating to books. It can look like a book, be inspired by a book, be created as a pun of a book title, or be a reproduction of a book cover, but has to be completely made out of food. Rules and entry forms are available at the Carmel Clay Public Library and on the library’s website. Entry forms must be submitted by July 19. For more information visit www.carmel.lib.in.us

Runners Club meeting – The Carmel Runners Club is kicking off its summer training session with a public event. The training sessions will focus on half and full marathon training for fall races but are open to anyone regardless of their plans to race. The club is open to people of all ages and skill levels – including walkers. The event will be conducted at 7:30 a.m. July 19 at the Monon Center. Plants for shady areas – Spring Green Garden Club presents Made in the Shade at 7 p.m. July 17 at John Hensel Government Center, 10701 N. College Ave. Master Gardener David Richey will talk about plants that thrive in a shade garden, including some that may surprise you. This event is free and open to public.

Juliets luncheon – Women in all stages of life – retired, working inside or outside the home – are invited to enjoy lunch with the Juliets (Just Us Ladies Into Eating Together) at 11:30 a.m. July 17 at Stone Creek Dining Company restaurant, located in the Hamilton Town Center in Noblesville. BackPack Attack drop locations – Indiana Members Credit Union and Foundation have partnered with Indy BackPack Attack for their tenth annual school supply drive.The IMCU Hamilton County branches will serve as public collection sites for the drive, with bins in their lobbies during branch hours through July 18. Some needed items for the drive include: backpacks, erasers, No. 2 pencils, calculators, crayons, markers, spiral notebooks, pens, art boxes, pencil sharpeners, rulers, notebook paper, scissors, pocket folders, colored pencils, glue sticks, hygiene products, hand sanitizer, tissues, alarm clocks and composition notebooks.

Pet first-aid class – IndyVet Emergency & Specialty Hospital, 5425 Victory Dr., Indianapolis, will host a pet first-aid and CPR class from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 26. Attendees will learn how to handle emergency situations including head trauma, shock, bleeding, heat stroke and more, and will also receive instructions on how to muzzle or restrain, how to carry and transport, and how to bandage and splint an injured animal. Cost is $50 and class size is limited so register by calling 846-8965.

Safe space to discuss death – Carmel-based Dr. Elaine Voci will host her inaugural Death Café at 1 p.m. July 20 at 11805 N. Pennsylvania St. in Carmel. The gathering is designed to be a place in which people can share thoughts, resources and ideas about death and dying. Each Death Café will uniquely reflect the participants’ interests. Desserts and beverages will be provided. Pre-registration is required by calling 730-5481
