Why did you become a teacher? My parents were both educators. Their love for teaching was contagious. They were constantly searching for creative ways to make learning meaningful and engaging. Starting at the age of 7, I helped my mom with her summer school program. She worked with young adults with severe disabilities. My mom inspired me because she did whatever it took to promote individual growth and success. She was fun, unique and her student’s biggest advocate. There was no doubt I wanted to teach from a young age.
What goals do you have for your students? My goal is to teach self-advocacy, perseverance and compassion. I want each student to know his/her strengths and passions and not be afraid to explore them. Imagine each child with a toolbox. I want to fill their boxes with a variety of tools they can access along their learning journey and beyond, into adulthood.
What do you encourage parents to do at home to help their children strengthen particular skills? Create opportunities for authentic learning outside the school setting. Connecting learning to life experiences is powerful and meaningful. Challenge your children to think creatively, problem solve, and take positive risks with their learning. Invest time in talking to your children about their day, personal goals and their reading interests.

What’s something your students might not know about you? I have competed in more than 20 half marathons and one marathon.
