Preview for Lion in Winter

The time is Christmas Eve, 1183 and the Plantagenet clan is holding a Christmas Court. Their eldest son, Henry, has died and it’s time for the monarch Henry II to choose a new heir. Gathered are his remaining sons: Richard (the LionHeart), Geoffrey, and John, as well as his wife of 31 years Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine.

Simple, you say? Ah, but this particular family is the definition of “Dysfuntional.” You see, Eleanor has waged war against her husband banding with Geoffrey and John – and almost won, causing Henry to lock her in a castle in Chinon, only allowing her out once a year. His mistress, who is in residence, is the sister of the King of France, and that – shall we say – is another issue.

With young Henry now deceased, King Henry must choose a new heir to the throne, causing Richard, Geoffrey and John to be a bit impatient. And with Eleanor in house for a visit, just about anything can happen.

James Goldman’s script infuses comedy, wit, sarcasm and a tad bit of passion, as the family weaves its way through Christmas. LION IN WINTER debuted on Broadway in 1966 but it was the 1968 film starring Peter O’Toole and Katherine Hepburn that brought Goldman’s script truly to life. There was a certain glamour to these medieval times and Goldman certainly does not have his characters mince words.
