Grade/subject at what school: Library Media Center, Monon Trail Elementary School

Number of years teaching: Eight

Why did you become a teacher? My passion for reading and my desire to share that passion with children and young adults are the key reasons for my becoming a teacher-librarian. I love to show students how to find the information (books, videos, maps, etc.) they need or want. To work in a profession where I can inspire curiosity in young people is a wonderful experience.

What goals do you have for your students? Reading is a skill that every child will use throughout life. My goal for all students is to find a genre they enjoy, so they will have good memories about reading.

What do you encourage parents to do at home to help their children strengthen particular skills? Reading can be a true bonding experience between a parent and child. Read aloud to your child and encourage your child to read to you. Let your child see you reading for pleasure in your spare time. Make reading a family activity. Encourage older children to read to their younger brothers and sisters.

What is your favorite movie? “Somewhere in Time”

Who is your favorite musician or band? Allison Krauss

What’s something your students might not know about you? I did not have the opportunity to go to college after graduating from high school, but I always wanted to go to school to become a teacher. After I started a family, I decided I was going to get my degree. I graduated from college the same month my son graduated from high school.
