Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard spent the past week in Washington D.C. as part of his responsibilities on President Obama’s new Task Force on ClimatePreparedness and Resilience.

But this week the action comes to Carmel when Brainard hosts one of the first locations for a roundtable discussion with Nancy Sutley, Chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, and other experts and dignitaries.

The discussion will be held Dec. 19 in the “Meeting Room” at the Monon Center in Central Park.

The roundtable is invitation-only, and media and cameras are not admitted during the roundtable.

“No matter your politics, there is overwhelming evidence of climate change and its impact on humanity. It’s clear that the poles are warming and, regardless of the reason, we need to be prepared to deal with the impacts of a changed climate,” Brainard said.

Sutley, Brainard and a select group of prominent business, environmental and academic leaders from across Indiana who will be given a rare opportunity to give input to the chief advisor on environmental issues to the president.

Task Force meetings will focus on specific issues related to climate change preparedness and resilience, including opportunities for greater federal and local coordination to strengthen disaster recovery and resilience. Future topics may include addressing the impacts of climate change on energy, water, and transportation infrastructure, human health, community development, natural resources, and agriculture.
