Number of years teaching: 30

Background/Schooling: Schlarman High School, Danville, Ill.; bachelor’s degree in special education, Saint Mary-of-the Woods College; and masters in special education, Indiana State University, Terre Haute.

Why did you become a teacher? I was fortunate to have many amazing teachers in elementary and high school. I knew I wanted to be just like them. During high school I worked at a summer program for students with disabilities and decided I wanted to be a special education teacher.

What goals do you have for your students? I want my students to become as independent as possible and take pride in their accomplishments.

What do you encourage parents to do at home to help their children strengthen particular skills? Read with your child and model good reading habits!

What is your favorite movie? The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

Who is your favorite musician or band? Martina McBride

What’s something your students might not know about you? I was the drum major in my high school marching band.
