A glimmer of activity is on the horizon for the languishing Shapiro’s Deli space.

Two bids on the vacant Shapiro’s building at 918 S. Range Line Rd. were received and reviewed at the Sept. 18 Community Redevelopment Committee meeting.

The minimum asking price for the 11,500 square foot property was $2.1 million.

The CRC bought Brian Shapiro’s mortgage on the struggling restaurant’s space for $2.5 million in 2010. When the restaurant closed in June, Shapiro signed over all of his remaining interests in it to the CRC. Restaurant equipment, as well as tables and chairs, have been left in the space.

“We have received two bids for the former Shapiro’s space on Range Line Road. The City’s redevelopment staff is reviewing the bids to ensure that they meet the specifications that were requested. If they are in compliance, the redevelopment staff will bring a recommendation to the next CRC meeting for a vote on Oct. 16th,” said CRC President Bill Hammer.

Both of the bids were from local companies, but only one of them hit the mark. LOR Corporation bid the minimum of $2.1 million, while Eclipse Real Estate offered a mere $500,000.

The CRC has also placed stipulations on how the building may be used, but the specifics of those uses are not yet available to the public.
