Former Fishers swim coach back in custody

Authorities in Tennessee are awaiting the arrival of former Fishers swim coach Ken Stopkottee, who will finally have to face eight charges there after eluding police since April.

Stopkotte, 48, who is facing one misdemeanor and one felony charge of theft, a felony forgery charge, two felony counts of false reporting, a felony aggravated perjury charge and a felony domestic assault charge, failed to show up for April hearings and had not been seen until he was spotted in the streets of Guadalajara, Mexico, and arrested July 12 by U.S. Marshals.

U.S. Marshall Danny Shelton said Stopkotte waived his extradition and will be back in Williamson County, Tenn., within a couple weeks. He is in the Harris County Jail in Houston, Texas, awaiting extradition.

According to Tennessee authorities, Stopkotte has been accused of going through church mailboxes and stealing checks which he then deposited into his own account. Franklin, Tenn., police said the domestic assault charge stemmed from an incident with Stopkotte’s now estranged wife, Rebecca Stopkotte.

In 2010, Stopkotte, who could not be reached for comment, was charged with stealing $17,000 in Fishers pool-rental money, but a Hamilton County prosecutor dismissed the charges in March 2012. Stopkotte filed a defamation lawsuit against the Hamilton Southeastern Schools, where he served as the Fishers High School swim coach from 2006 to 2010, but court records show the case was dismissed in May 2013.

Hamilton Southeastern Schools officials declined to comment on Stopkotte’s most recent arrest.

A defamation lawsuit also was filed against Mel Goldstein, who represented YMCA’s Indy Swim Fit, a program run by Goldstien which used the Fisher’s pool that Stopkotte was in charge of renting. That suit is still pending.

Goldstein could not be reached before publication.
