ZCS nearing capacity

Bids will soon go out for four school projects, including an addition to the high school. The Zionsville School Board voted last week to move forward in response to growing enrollment and community calls for facility improvements.

The projects include: high school addition and renovation; Pleasant View Elementary renewal; maintenance facility; and high school tennis courts. The projects will be funded with money remaining from the 2005 bond issues. Use of the funds will allow the projects to be completed without raising taxes.

Work at the high school will add or reconfigure instructional space to accommodate 2,500 students while adding food service capacity, large group spaces and activity/community space. The 71,000-square-foot addition and modifications to existing space are budgeted at $10.2 million.

The current high school is expected to max out capacity by 2018 – the recommended changes would stretch capacity until 2023 or beyond.

The project renewal at Pleasant View will include carpet, lighting, ceiling tiles, paint and equipment retrofitting at a cost of $540,000.

The maintenance facility project is estimated to cost $2.1 million; while the tennis courts project will cost $1.05 million. It calls for demolition of the current courts to make room for the high school expansion and relocation to the current multi-sport facility.

The next school board meeting is set for 6 p.m. July 15 at the Educational Services Center. Minutes and podcasts of all school board meetings can be found at www.zcs.k12.in.us.
