Indiana University Health has named Dennis Murphy system chief operating officer. Murphy, an experienced healthcare executive, comes to IU Health from Northwestern Memorial HealthCare in Chicago, where he most recently served as chief operating officer and executive vice president.

As COO, Murphy will oversee the operation of IU Health entities throughout the system, including the administrative functions of the IU Health strategic service lines. He will start Monday, July 22.

“I am looking forward to the privilege of being a part of the outstanding organization that is IU Health, and to working with such a highly skilled team throughout the state to deliver on the IU Health promise of assurance,” Murphy says. “I know that together, we’ll be able to take this organization to new levels of excellence to best serve the patients and families who seek us for their care.”

At Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, Murphy led the implementation of key system-wide initiatives, which resulted in consistent multi-year improvements in patient satisfaction, cost reduction, clinical program mix and throughput optimization and key clinical quality initiatives. He also was responsible for the opening of a 328-bed, $507-million replacement women’s hospital.

Prior to joining Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, Murphy was vice president of Ambulatory Services and Financial Planning for University of Chicago Hospitals, and before that he spent 10 years at Johns Hopkins  Hospital in Baltimore in a variety of roles, from administrative fellow to assistant administrator of the department of Surgical Sciences.

Murphy will report to IU Health chief executive officer, Dan Evans.

“I am pleased to welcome Dennis to the IU Health team. He brings a wealth of experience and talent to our organization,” says Evans. “Dennis has demonstrated impactful results in the operations of large, nationally renowned medical centers. I know he will help lead IU Health into a strong future, in the midst of the many changes and challenges that face our industry.”

Murphy earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from University of Notre Dame and a Master of Healthcare Administration from Duke University. He is an active volunteer and a participant on several boards.

Murphy and his wife Kristy and their children will relocate to the Indianapolis community this summer.
