Flash mob designed to raise dance awareness

Westfield’s Adagio Dance Academy hosted a dance flash mob last Saturday in downtown Carmel to help National Dance Week achieve its mission to “celebrate dance and promote fun fitness.”

“We are so proud that Adagio Dance Academy put so much time and effort into organizing this flash mob,” said Cathy Graziano, co-director of National Dance Week. “It was so much in the spirit of what we were trying to accomplish during dance week as we put dancers together with the community to promote health awareness and the fun of getting your body moving.”

According to Adagio owner Dusty Marshall, Carmel has embraced the visual arts.

“The city welcomed us with enthusiasm,” Marshall said.

Adagio instructor Lauren Cotton and student instructor Alli Schwaegler choreographed the dance. Students, parents, friends and local businesses were invited to join in.

The 2013 Flash Mob was just one part of several NDW activities scheduled from April 26 through tomorrow designed to bring mainstream exposure to dance, as well as encourage people to get active and live a less sedentary lifestyle. This flash mob was performed nationwide simultaneously to bring attention to the art of dance and promote it as a fun form of expression and exercise.

“It is so important in today’s society for people, especially children, to shut off their computers and TVs and get more exercise,” Graziano said. “Dance is a fun way to start and Adagio is helping lead the way. We are ecstatic with their efforts and appreciate what they did to help make this year’s National Dance Week such a success.”
