Indiana University Health Saxony Hospital recently honored Dr. William N. Capello, internationally known orthopedic surgeon and Emeritus Professor of the Indiana University School of Medicine, for his many accomplishments in the field of orthopedics. Capello’s contributions to orthopedics included the development of hip replacement implants and surgical procedures that have positively impacted thousands of lives worldwide.

To commemorate his achievements, IU Health Saxony Hospital dedicated the Dr. William N. Capello Education Center on April 10 and continues his legacy with a hip and knee replacement program and orthopedic fellowship.

“Dr. Capello made significant contributions to the field of orthopedics, from both a clinical and educational perspective,” said Daniel F. Evans, Jr., president and CEO of Indiana University Health. “We’re extremely grateful to have him as a member of the IU Health family.”

During Capello’s 35-year career with the IU School of Medicine, he established a reputation as a national and international leader in hip replacement. He was active in academic research and instrumental in research studies that resulted in publishing numerous peer-reviewed articles on hip replacement in the leading orthopedic surgery medical journals. Capello served 20 years as Professor of Orthopedic Surgery, where he mentored countless medical students and residents. Today he continues lecturing on hip replacement and serves on several national committees to further advance the treatment of hip arthritis and the field of hip replacement surgery. He is regarded as one of the top hip surgeons in the U.S.

“Bill Capello is an extremely accomplished hip surgeon who positively impacted our specialty for generations to come,” said Michael Meneghini, MD, director of Joint Replacement at IU Health Saxony Hospital and Assistant Professor of Clinical Orthopedic Surgery with the IU School of Medicine. “It is our privilege to honor him through the naming of the Dr. William N. Capello Education Center.”

To highlight his achievements, the Dr. William N. Capello Education Center at IU Health Saxony Hospital includes a wall display chronicling his career in orthopedics. The Education Center will be used for physician and staff training, community seminars and classes.
