The Voice of Aging Shares “How to Survive Your Role as a Family Caregiver” in Day-Long Conference

The Voice of Aging, a private organization dedicated to increasing access to support and resources for caregivers, will host a unique conference dedicated to meeting the practical and emotional needs of the family caregiver. The conference will be held at the Ritz Charles, Carmel on Tuesday, February 26. Registration is $25 per person or $40 for VIP admission which includes a private book-signing session with Keynote Speaker Jane Gross, former New York Times correspondent and author of A Bittersweet Season: Caring for Our Aging Parents and Ourselves.

There are more than 42 million unpaid family caregivers in the United States, according to the AARP report “Home Alone: Family Caregivers Providing Complex Chronic Care.” This report reveals the complexity of tasks performed by family caregivers, the lack of support and training they receive, and the effect on their quality of life. While family support is critical to remaining in one’s home, the report states, that support often comes at substantial emotional, physical and financial costs to the care givers.

“As an elder law attorney and registered nurse, I’ve seen the extreme toll care giving for a family member can take,” says Carol Applegate, presenting sponsor and founder of The Voice of Aging and attorney with Applegate Elder Law. “With this conference, we want to help people become more prepared and then, when the inevitable happens, we want to help them find the resources they need to care for their loved one and themselves.”

Until you’ve been in the role as a caregiver, says Carol, it’s difficult to appreciate how overwhelming it can be to be responsible for the care of a loved one. “Not only is the caregiver stressing daily over trying to make the best decisions possible for their loves ones,” she says, “but they’re dealing with internal issues related to guilt and a lost sense of balance in their own personal lives.”

Whether you’re caring for a loved one today or anticipate doing so in the future, this conference is intended to provide access to some of the best resources in Central Indiana, not to mention advice on coping from health and social service professionals.

The conference will feature Author Jane Gross who was forced to face challenges that she had never imagined when she found herself suddenly thrust into a caretaker role for her 85-year-old mother. A correspondent for the New York Times for 29 years, she began penning “The New Old Age” blog as a response to her own caregiving experience.

The conference also will include:

  • Breakout sessions during which professional and medical speakers will provide practical guidance and coping skills for caregivers dealing with emotional, financial, psychological or palliative care issues.
  • Exhibitors offering information, products and services relevant to the needs of both the caregiver and the person for whom they are caring.
  • A take-away Toolkit to help guide caregivers through the complex world of family care giving.
